곱씹어볼만한 디터 람스의 좋은 디자인 원칙

아이팟, 아이폰, 아이패드로 이어지는 애플 제품에 “디자인이 나쁘다”고 말하는 이들은 많지 않습니다. 그러나 애플 디자인이 왜 좋은가? 라고 누군가 묻는다면 한 마디로 답을 하기가 쉽지 않을 것입니다. 그저 보기에도 좋고 쓰기 편하다는 얘기를 꺼낼 수 밖에요.

조너선 아이브와 스티브 잡스

애플 하면 스티브 잡스를 먼저 떠올리지만 조너선 아이브라는 숨은 공신이 있습니다. 현재 애플에서 디자인을 담당하고 있는 부사장이죠. 스티브 잡스의 ‘마술’에서 그가 해내는 역할은 무척 중요합니다. 핵심이랄 수 있는 디자인을 책임지니까요.

98년 애플이 출시한 아이맥이라는 제품이 있습니다. 아이맥은 당시 필수 장치로 여겨졌던 디스크 드라이브를 없애고 USB 포트만을 갖춘 일체형 PC였습니다. 당시 이 제품에 대해 평론가들은 “융통성이 없다”고 지적하기도 했지만, 아이맥은 5개월 만에 80만대가 팔려나갔고 덕분에 적자에 허덕이던 애플은 흑자 행진을 이어갈 수 있었습니다.

애플에서 쫓겨났다 97년 CEO로 복귀한 스티브 잡스의 마술은 아이맥에서부터 시작됐다고 해도 과언이 아니죠. 이 아이맥의 디자인을 맡은 이가 바로 조너선 아이브라는 세기의 디자이너입니다.

우리가 잘 알고 있는 맥북을 비롯해 아이팟과 아이폰도 그의 손길을 거쳤고, 얼마 전 공개된 아이패드의 디자인 역시 그의 작품입니다. 영국 출신인 조너선 아이브는 제품 디자이너로서는 처음으로 영국 기사 작위를 받기도 했습니다.

조너선 아이브는 공식석상에 서는 일은 거의 없기 때문에 그가 가진 디자인 철학이 무엇인 지는 애플 제품을 통해 유추해낼 수 밖에 없습니다. 그러나 그가 존경하는 인물이 누구인 지 알면 보다 명확하게 그의 철학을 확인할 수 있을 것입니다.

디터 람스

디터 람스라는 인물이 있습니다. 그는 독일의 소형 가전 업체 브라운의 제품 디자이너였죠. 디터 람스의 디자인 철학은 ‘작지만 낫게’(Less but Better)라고 표현할 수 있습니다. 많은 기능을 담고 있으나 최대한 단순하게, 뺄껀 과감하게 빼는 심플한 디자인이 가장 아릅답다는 것입니다.

1950년대, 디터 람스는 오디오에 처음으로 회색을 적용함과 동시에 투명한 플라스틱 뚜껑을 도입해 큰 화제를 모았습니다. 마치 순백색의 아이팟 본체와 이어폰이 인기를 얻은 것 처럼요. 58년 그는 금속 스탠드를 채용해 심미성을 살린 스피커와 63년 독일 최초의 소형 트랜지스터 라디오를 디자인했고, 휴대할 수 있는 라디오와 단순함이 돋보이는 계산기 등 수많은 제품을 디자인했습니다.

아이폰과 브라운의 탁상용 계산기

조너선 아이브가 직접적으로 얘기한 적은 없지만 애플의 아이폰은 디터 람스가 디자인한 브라운 계산기에서, 아이팟은 브라운 휴대용 라디오의 디자인을 모티브로 삼고 있습니다.

아래 디터 람스가 말하는 좋은 디자인 원칙을 곱씹어보면 애플, 그리고 애플의 디자인 책임자인 조너선 아이브의 디자인 철학을 알 수 있을 듯 합니다. 특히 마지막 ‘좋은 디자인은 가능한 적게 디자인한 것이다’라는 원칙은 현재 애플의 디자인 철학과 딱 맞아떨어집니다.

디터 람스는 브라운의 수석디자이너, 전무이사를 거쳐 지난 97년 회사를 떠났지만 그가 추구하는 브라운의 디자인 정체성은 아직도 그대로 남아 있습니다. 최근 출시되고 있는 브라운의 전기면도기를 비롯해 각종 소형 가전제품의 디자인은 예나 지금이나 디터 람스의 좋은 디자인 원칙을 그대로 따르고 있습니다.

혹자는 애플을 논하며 우리나라에는 왜 스티브 잡스 같은 인물이 없냐고 말합니다. 저는 스티브 잡스 같은 인물은 우리나라에도 얼마든지 있다고 생각합니다. 다만, 브라운의 디터 람스와 애플의 조너선 아이브와 같이 자사 제품의 명확한 디자인 방향성을 그릴 수 있는 강력한 카리스마를 가진 디자이너가 과연 우리나라에는 얼마나 될 지 의문입니다.

관리부서의 힘이 세고, 수익을 중시하는 우리나라의 기업 문화에선 이러한 디자이너가 나오기란 쉽지 않은 일일 것입니다. 기술 분야도 마찬가지입니다. 스티브 잡스를 논할 게 아닙니다. 백발의 현장 기술자, 한 분야에서 한 우물만 파는 연구개발자, 힘 있는 디자이너가 나올 수 있도록 기업 문화가 만들어져야 한국판 스티브 잡스도 나올 수 있을 것입니다.
